THE NAME

It was on the 19th June 1848 that the name -THE PEOPLE'S CHAPEL - was chosen.

It seemed to express well the principles underlying this democratic fellowship.

To Adapt Abraham Lincoln's famous phrase, it was to be a

Chapel of the People,

by the People,

for the People.

The founders were not specially keen on founding a new Baptist Church - nothing was further from their minds than any mere denominational movement - they were after something greater - a Chapel for the People.  A place to which ordinary people, and poor people, and suffering people, and ignorant people, could come for the worship provided by a simple religious service conducted and carried through in every detail by those who themselves belonged to the common people.

From an Address delivered by William Finnemore in 1933 on the 85th Anniversary of the Founding of the Chapel
